What Is An IP Address?

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to the internet. It’s like a street address that identifies computers on the network. The IP address can be used to identify which country, region, and even city a user is in. Every machine or device connected to the internet has its own IP address, allowing it to communicate with other machines through the World Wide Web. Each IP address consists of four numbers separated by periods (e.g., 192.168.1.105).

When you type in an internet domain name such as www.example.com, your computer contacts DNS servers which translates this domain name into its corresponding IP address – this tells your computer where the website you are trying to access is located on the internet. In this way, IP addresses are like the building blocks of the internet. Without them, websites would be unable to communicate with each other and you wouldn’t be able to access them. So when you surf online, it’s your IP address that allows you to access web pages, send emails and make voice calls over the internet.

IPv4 & IPv6 - What's The Difference?

IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are both used to identify devices connected to the internet. They are two different versions of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, which are unique numbers assigned to a device.

IPv4 is the fourth version of an IP address system and was introduced in 1981. It consists of four sets of numbers separated by periods, e.g., 192.168.0.1. Each set contains one to three digits, ranging from 0-255, and this allows for over four billion total possible combinations. IPv4 has been widely used since its introduction and is still the most commonly used today, however it is not suitable for the huge number of devices now connected to the internet due to the limited range of possible combinations.

IPv6 was introduced in 1998 and consists of eight sets of numbers separated by colons, e.g., 2001:db8:0:1234::1. Each set contains four hexadecimal digits (numbers and letters) ranging from 0-9 and A-F, allowing for over 340 trillion trillion possible combinations – far more than enough to accommodate all the devices now connected to the internet. IPv6 is slowly becoming more popular as it is better able to handle the number of devices connecting to the internet today.
